Ohioans Stand Up for Good Jobs, Strong Communities

Rallies in 13 Communities Show Citizens United for a Better Ohio

Statewide, OH—This Tuesday in 13 locations across Ohio, tens of thousands of people will be standing up for Good Jobs and Strong Communities. We have watched the Governor and his allies in the Senate push through a bill restricting workers’ rights over bipartisan opposition. We watched a state of the state message that told us nothing about the budget that would be unveiled days later, yet the Governor is holding a “town hall” to create the illusion of inclusion in this budget process. We already know that his budget will likely call for the closings of state facilities, a significant cut to the local government funds, cuts to education, cuts to community services and a draconian attack on workers’ rights aimed at dismantling the pensions, health care and respect that millions of Ohio workers have already fought for and won.

“I don’t know how you can tell my kids’ teacher that they have no say in the classroom, tell them they’re going to be fired if they speak up for my child, and expect me to think that you aren’t attacking my community. I’m not personally in a union, but don’t go after my kids’ teachers to save a buck!” said Missy Conley, a parent of two elementary children in the Portsmouth School District.

Today Ohioans from all walks of life will take to parks, street corners and town squares to express their vision for Ohio—an Ohio where good people work hard and are respected for their work.

“We put our lives on the line for our community. Our members run toward gunfire, not away from it,” said Paul Hlynsky, police officer and President of Akron Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, “and all we want is the ability to sit at the table and be part of the talks about safety and security issues. We’re not trying to get rich, we’re not Wall Street Bankers, we just want to help our neighbors and take care of our families the best we can”

Ohioans in places like Maumee, Vandalia, Strongsville, Oberlin, Jefferson, Mansfield, Salem, Westerville, Akron, Cincinnati, Portsmouth, Steubenville and Cambridge, are gathering with their neighbors to send a strong message to Columbus. We want to unite Ohioans to solve our problems. We want leaders that inspire us to work together, not threaten to run us over. We want to stand up for good jobs and strong communities!
